It’s nearly Easter time and many of us are busy preparing for this big and important religious celebration of the Greek Orthodox faith. This is a great opportunity to teach your children the relevant vocabulary they might hear at this time of the year- εκκλησία, λαμπάδα, νηστεία, Χριστός, Πάσχα, αυγά etc.
One activity I like to do with my children is to make an Easter card for a family member or friend. They have fun creating the card, whilst also learning how to say ‘Happy Easter’ in Greek and learning how to structure the wording of a greeting card. Many kids do not know how to say ‘dear’ ‘to’ and ‘from’ in Greek. The message inside the card should be adapted to the ability and skill level of your child. It could be as simple as:
Στην γιαγιά,
Χρόνια Πολλά!
Από την Μαρία
Or it could be more detailed:
Στην αγαπημένη μου γιαγία,
Χρόνια Πολλά και Καλή Ανάσταση!
Με αγάπη, η Μαρία
Below is a colouring sheet you can download for free- print it out, get your child to colour it in and fold it in half to make a card. Write any message you like inside the card and most importantly, have fun!
You could also practice writing greeting cards for other occasions- Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
I hope you all have a Happy Easter! Καλή Ανάσταση!
