Does your child have a book that they love to read over and over again? Well why not translate it and make a Greek version of the book? While some books are available in Greek, others are either unavailable or hard to come by, so I’ve found a practical and affordable solution:
- Translate the text to Greek
- Print it out and cut out the text
- Attach to the cut out text to the book with blue-tac
I’ve done this at the language school that I teach at and the children really enjoy listening to the stories. I have translated three books so far:
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar
- Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
- Where is the Green Sheep?
These stories are very familiar to children, which in my opinion is an added bonus! They know that when I’m reading “Καφέ αρκούδα, καφέ αρκούδα, τί βλέπεις;” it translates to “Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?” Rather than worrying about comprehension, they are able to immediately start making connections between the Greek words and the English words. They are therefore able to commit any new Greek words to long term memory much quicker than what they would if it was the first time that they were reading the book. The captivating illustrations in these books are also helpful of course.

Η Κάμπια Που Πεινούσε Πολύ
Κάτω από την λάμψη του φεγγαριού, φαινόταν ένα μικρό αυγό σε ένα φύλλο.
Μια Κυριακή πρωί, μια μικρή και πολύ πεινασμένη κάμπια, βγήκε από το αυγό.
Άρχισε να γυρεύει φαγητό.
Τη Δευτέρα έφαγε ένα μήλο. Αλλά ακόμη πεινούσε.
Την Τρίτη έφαγε δύο αχλάδια. Αλλά ακόμη πεινούσε.
Την Τετάρτη έφαγε τρία δαμάσκηνα. Αλλά ακόμη πεινούσε.
Την Πέμπτη έφαγε τέσσερεις φράουλες. Αλλά ακόμη πεινούσε.
Την Παρασκευή έφαγε πέντε πορτοκάλια. Αλλά ακόμη πεινούσε.
Το Σάββατο έφαγε ένα κομμάτι σοκολατένιο γλύκισμα, ένα παγωτό, μια πίκλα, ένα κομμάτι τυρί, ένα κομμάτι σαλάμι, ένα γλειφιτζούρι, ένα κομμάτι πίτα, ένα λουκάνικο, μια μικρή τούρτα, και ένα κομμάτι καρπούζι.
Εκείνη τη νύχτα, πονούσε το στομάχι του.
Η επόμενη μέρα ήταν Κυριακή. Η κάμπια έφαγε ένα πράσινο φύλλο και ένιωσε πολύ καλύτερα.
Δεν ήταν πια μια μικρούλα κάμπια.Ήταν μεγάλη και παχιά
Φτιάχνει ένα μικρό σπιτάκι: ένα κουκούλι. Η κάμπια μένει μέσα στο κουκούλι της για δύο βδομάδες. Μετά τρυπάει το κουκούλι της και βγαίνει…
